The name Bukit Chandan was taken in conjunction with the name of an elephant to Sultan Yusuf Sharifuddin Mudzaffar Shah (the 27th Sultan of Perak) who ruled the state of Perak for only 10 months. Then the old man came to pray and said, "Your Majesty will become the Sultan of Perak. After your majesty is installed as Sultan, do not reside in Sayong but let your majesty build a palace on the hill at the edge of Batang Hari. So the elephant named Kulup Chandan should be released by the Lord seven days after the coronation of the Lord". When King Idris was installed as the 28th Sultan of Perak, he fulfilled the promise and order he made with the old man he met at the foot of Mount Bubu. So on July 29, 1887, which was the day of the coronation of Sultan Idris I as the 28th sultan of Perak, the area around the official palace of the Sultan of Perak began to be known as Bukit Chandan.
